Lake Superior, 12” x 16”, oil on panel, 2004
From the Coast To Canvas Project
The orange lichen growing on this rock face in Lake Superior was one of the elements that drew me into to painting this scene. The narrow channel created between the small island to the right and the mainland was the other. Earlier in the day I paddled through it to keep out of the rougher water. It was then that the incredible colour and clarity struck me. There are many places to see this on Superior, but the waves can cut down on your visibility. Here, despite the winds, a little oasis of calm existed, giving you that floating feeling.
