18″ × 46″, oil on linen (2010) Near Pond Inlet, Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada
From the INTO THE ARCTIC Project
Perched on the northern tip of Baffin Island, at the eastern entrance to the Northwest Passage, Pond Inlet is one of the most picturesque Arctic communities I’ve visited. In between excursions farther afield, a local hike brought me to this beach just east of the hamlet. The combination of rocky outcroppings, Bylot Island’s towering mountains, a solitary iceberg, the distant fog, and waves gently crashing ashore made for a compelling afternoon to be out painting in the North.
