From the INTO THE ARCTIC Project
A two-hour boat ride brought us deep into Pangnirtung Fiord, where the sound of Billy Arnaquq’s motor faded away.
We were told not to linger; the greatest risk of a polar bear encounter comes just after landing, at the water’s edge. Within moments of starting our 98-kilometre journey, a serpentine stream cut through my view, accompanied by a towering granite wall and cabin-sized boulders strewn across the land.
Twenty minutes later, watching over my shoulder and with a new pencil sketch in my pack, I was ready to move on.
