30″ × 64″, oil on linen (2017) Thomsen River, Aulavik National Park, Banks Island, Northwest Territories, Canada
From the INTO THE ARCTIC Project
The most northerly navigable canoe route in North America is not a technically difficult river to paddle, but it has its challenges. The first is getting there. The second is the north wind, which at times whips the easy-flowing river into a frenzy, forcing one to pitch camp. It was on one of these layovers that I hiked up to find this view, bringing a true sense of scale to our journey.
