Floating By

16″ × 36″, oil on linen (2011) Near Qikiqtarjuaq, Baffin Island, Nunavut, Canada

From the INTO THE ARCTIC Project

This iceberg off the coast of Baffin Island captivated me as I painted it from the bow of Billy’s 24-foot freighter canoe. With waves rocking me back and forth, he kept his hand on the throttle in case the ’berg flipped. As I tried to capture the white of the ice, I realized there really wasn’t any. Instead, I saw an endless variation of blues, greens, magentas, and even yellows, all of it made more dramatic by the darkening skies.
