Fall on the Tundra

16″ × 30″, oil on linen (2011) Off the Dempster Highway, Yukon, Canada

From the INTO THE ARCTIC Project

Alternating between spongy moss and ankle-twisting rocks, my family and I hiked the colourful Arctic tundra, leaving behind the safety of our rv on the Dempster Highway. A kilometre in, this stream-bedded gully brought me to a standstill. By the time I set up my easel, our 7-year-old daughter Sydney had already finished her first drawing. Accentuating the afternoon, two grizzly bears wandered by, wondering what we were up to. A lovely family outing in the North.
