Caledon Pine

10” x 16”, oil on linen (2018) Caledon, Ontario, Canada

I’ve always loved the power and sweeping strength exuded by the majestic pine trees of northern Ontario. Crowns of the Canadian shield.

That’s why when I first saw this specimen growing in the middle of a local local farm field as a teenager, it caught me by surprise. It almost seemed out of place.

I often contemplated trying to paint it, and often found myself returning to it each season over the last few decades. Recently, I decided to have one more look. Surrounded by winter’s remains, and under the warmth of the evening sky, I found the setting that spoke to me, and paid my homage on canvas.
